“Dying is not a physical event. It’s not a medical event. It’s an emotional, communal, and social event. You don’t have to have a medical degree to support a person who’s dying and/or their family. What you need is knowledge in the dying process.”

Who is Barbara Karnes?

Barbara Karnes is an award-winning end-of-life educator and registered nurse. In 2015, she was named the International Humanitarian Woman of the Year, and in 2018, she won the NHPCO Hospice Innovator Award for her work in the hospice industry.

Barbara tended to hundreds of people during the dying process, and while at their bedsides, noticed that each death followed a near-identical script. Not only were all of her patients going through the stages of death in almost the same ways, but their families often had similar questions about the process. These realizations led Barbara to write Gone From My Sight, “The Little Blue Book” that changed the hospice industry.

Gone From My Sight is the most widely referenced patient and family educational resource on the stages of death, how to prepare for the end of life, and how to care for patients that are experiencing these stages. Her knowledge, and her courses, are invaluable tools that both hospice caregivers and their patients can gain clarity and piece of mind from.

The End-of-Life Care Series

Barbara Karnes’ end-of-life care series is a program of online courses designed to train, educate, and guide caregivers in hospice care, whether you’re a healthcare professional, a family member, or a patient. Based on Barbara’s years of experience with terminally ill patients and their families, these courses provide insights and knowledge that caregivers can use to compassionately serve their patients during their final days. Care professionals can also earn CEUs through the end-of-life care series. Each learner will earn a certificate of completion, and 5 CEUs will be awarded to participating healthcare professionals.
