Winning at business isn’t just about who has the biggest budget, the legacy of a brand, or who you know. Winning, no matter the sport, is always decided by who leverages the time played better than the competition.

Have you ever had a goal that was really important to you and your business, yet despite its importance, the chaos of the day kept getting in the way? Home care owners frequently ask me how they can grow their business, develop their teams, and have a business that supports their lives without sacrificing everything they care about to make it happen.

The answers and strategies I share with them come from years of learning and decades of working with high-performing owners and operators at every level of growth. Achieving growth without overwhelm is not only possible; it’s predictable with the right formula.

Understanding the Rules of the Game

Winning at business isn’t just about who has the biggest budget, the legacy of a brand, or who you know. Winning, no matter the sport, is always decided by who leverages the time played better than the competition. It’s about being the champion of the seconds that matter most by being prepared, practiced, and committed to strategic actions for sustainable, repeatable success.

“At the end of the day, being successful is about doing more of what is working and less of what isn’t.”

The Next Steps to Growth Without Overwhelm

Growth without overwhelm means knowing the next steps to take, which removes the mask of uncertainty often confused for overwhelm. Remember this: “Overwhelm is a mask for uncertainty.”

I remember the first time our business grew seven figures in nine months. Sure, we were happy, excited, and proud… but none of that was our first thought. When we ran the numbers at 12:01 a.m. on January 1st, Jessica looked up at me with teary eyes and sighed, “Was it worth it?”

If you just read that statement and instantly remembered your “was it worth it” moment and felt the same flush of exhaustion, then you are exactly where you need to be right now. Because I am about to share with you the proven framework I have honed in our business and have helped hundreds of owners and operators, just like you, build a business by design and create growth without overwhelm.

The Chaos Funnel

In three simple steps, you can gain more clarity and confidence in your next steps:

  • Step 1: Identify Your End Result

Outcomes are results, not achievements. The outcomes happening in your business right now are the result of systems and processes. Now, they might not be outcomes you like, but they are still the result of systems and processes. When you understand the power of intentional outcomes, your business takes on a new life. Gone are the days of waking up having no idea what is going to happen. Instead, you know that regardless of what happens, your intentional outcome will be the driving force.

You might be asking yourself right now, “What makes an outcome intentional?” The answer can be summed up in two words: “End Results.”

When I teach owners to create intentional outcomes, it starts by first identifying what their end result is. What is the one thing that they have control over that simply must occur at the end of this project, day, quarter, etc.? Not something that relies on someone else’s choice or favor. That one unmovable outcome that takes skill, work, effort, or knowledge to make happen.

  • Step 2: Leverage the Known Variables

If I called you on the phone and gave you a 24/7 client, what is the first thing you would do? What if I called right when you got everyone scheduled and gave you another one? Then another… then… are you feeling overwhelmed yet? Why? Is it because you “can’t handle it” or because you are out of people to call?

At the end of the day, being successful is about doing more of what is working and less of what isn’t. When you and your team are focused on an end result, it is important to ask: “What is helping us achieve…” and “what is hurting us from achieving…”

Once you have identified what in your business is helping you achieve the end result, you can leverage those things to align (or realign) your actions and support your business in being successful.

  • Step 3: Commit to Action

What are the skills, resources, training, daily actions, and habits that drive you toward your end result? This step is more about the leader than the team. As the owner or operator of your post-acute care business, how are you supporting your support staff in doing more of what’s working? Are you investing in technology, are you creating a culture of learning, are you a champion of quick-wins that build confidence in the person and the process?

At a recent two-day, in-person training event we host for members of our coaching program, The Action Leader Experience, one owner asked me: “How do I know the decision I am making is the right one?”

My answer was simple: “You know it’s the right one because it’s the one you made.”

So often we make decisions and then instantly question if they were right or wrong. The truth is you cannot make a right or wrong decision… you can only make the decision. The choice isn’t good or bad, it’s the actions you take next that determine the outcome. Have you ever made a decision that seemed like it was wrong at the moment, but then, out of nowhere, you pulled victory from the mouth of defeat and achieved more than you ever thought possible?

That is why understanding this framework is so important in the life and legacy of a post-acute care owner. This framework helps you make intelligent decisions based on fact not faith. It helps you turn chaos into a catalyst and leverage what is working in your business to help you achieve your intentional outcomes.

The more intentional outcomes you achieve, the more your business can grow.

“The truth is you cannot make a right or wrong decision… you can only make the decision. The choice isn’t good or bad, it’s the actions you take next that determine the outcome.”
